WSJ.com Redesign

Kudos to the Wall Street Journal for finally redesigning their site. The new site features web 2.0 elements, a horizontal navigation bar, tabs for organizing article content, and an overall better information architecture. The new design makes the site easier to use, share articles and promote a sense of community.

One of the most interesting elements is the comments tab at the every top of the article. Most sites have this element at the bottom and use it as a call to action. By having it as tabbed element, people may be more likely to preview the comments before they read the article. I am interested to see if the article comment rate increases or decreases.

The site is using, for the most part, an all CSS layout, which is now the standard. From a SEO perspective, the internal linking strategy is solid. Links point to the discussed companies profile or stock page.

As far as follies, the category page has numerous h2 tags. Their developers just got lazy there, as they could have just stylized the entire div id.  I also don’t know why they are throwing the no follow tags on their footer links. These links are pointing to WSJ network sites, and should share the link love.

On a whole, I really like the redesign and will continue to pay my monthly subscription.
